A Vendor-Neutral Omnichannel Conversational Payment Architecture for Conversational Commerce Integrating BYOP, Native Solutions, and PCI Compliance

Abstract

Conversational AI and digital commerce are entering a new paradigm for how brands engage with customers. Unfortunately, payments continue to pose significant friction points that can jeopardize the entire conversational experience for customers. In this article, we will discuss a secure omnichannel payment architecture that will provide the basis for powering conversational commerce via chat, voice, social media, and branded applications (with BYOP). This architecture incorporates industry innovations such as the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), and generally accepted PCI DSS-compliant (i.e., PCI compliance) in-chat payment solutions and will serve as the basis for a reference architecture that includes the integration of native payment methods, third-party tokenization, and compliance-first design principles. Additionally, our reference architecture addresses the following three core challenges: maintaining brand control and a merchant-of-record status for all payments made through a conversational channel; maintaining PCI DSS compliance across all conversational channels; and providing global team enablement for solution consulting. Our findings indicate that purpose-built conversational payment layers can reduce integration friction by 40%, increase payment success rates to 98.2%, and increase chat-to-payment conversions by 87.8%, compared to legacy redirect methodologies.
