Digital Transformation in Higher Education Management: Opportunities, Challenges and Institutional Readiness

Abstract

Digital transformation is transforming higher education administration by enabling institutions to gain a competitive advantage in terms of administrative efficiency, decision-making capabilities, services for students, and institutional planning and resource management. Artificial intelligence, cloud platforms, integrated information systems, data analytics, and process automation are some of the technologies that are becoming more and more relevant to structuring and providing the fundamental services of universities. This article analyzes the opportunities digital transformation brings, the key obstacles in its implementation and the degree of institutional readiness for successful, long-term change. This study uses a descriptive, comparative method with the use of relevant institutional evidence and selected higher education case studies. The analysis suggests that, besides the technology investment, factors such as organizational culture, cybersecurity, organizational infrastructure, data governance, and workforce capability are key to the successful transformation. The article suggests that institutions need to evaluate their readiness for the scale of their digital projects, and to create strategies and plans that coordinate the technology, people, processes and governance with institutional goals
