The Personalization–Privacy Paradox: A Conceptual Framework for Ethical AI-Driven Consumer Analytics

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed consumer analytics by enabling organizations to deliver highly personalized products, services, and marketing experiences through the analysis of large volumes of consumer data. AI-driven personalization enhances customer engagement, improves decision-making, and strengthens organizational competitiveness by generating individualized recommendations, predictive insights, and targeted communications. However, the increasing reliance on personal data has intensified concerns regarding consumer privacy, data security, algorithmic transparency, and ethical data use, creating what is widely recognized as the personalization–privacy paradox. While consumers value personalized experiences, they simultaneously express growing concerns about how organizations collect, process, and utilize their personal information. Existing research has examined AI-enabled personalization, consumer privacy, and ethical data governance independently; however, limited attention has been given to integrating these perspectives into a comprehensive conceptual framework that explains how organizations can balance personalization with responsible data practices. This study addresses this gap by developing a conceptual framework that integrates AI-driven consumer analytics, ethical AI governance, data transparency, consumer trust, privacy protection, and organizational accountability. Adopting a conceptual research design, the study synthesizes scholarly literature published through December 2024 on artificial intelligence, consumer analytics, personalization, privacy, data governance, marketing ethics, and consumer trust. The findings suggest that organizations can mitigate the personalization–privacy paradox by embedding ethical AI principles, transparent data governance, responsible data management, and consumer-centric privacy practices into AI-enabled marketing strategies. The proposed framework demonstrates that ethical AI governance strengthens consumer trust, improves organizational accountability, and enables sustainable personalization while protecting consumer privacy. This study contributes to the marketing and information systems literature by integrating fragmented perspectives into a comprehensive framework for ethical AI-driven consumer analytics and offers practical guidance for organizations seeking to balance technological innovation with responsible consumer data management
